Les Trouveurs

A French vocal duo specializing in medieval music, founded by Mathias Lunghi and Camile Macinenti

Les Trouveurs is a vocal duo dedicated to medieval music. Through programmes for two voices, the ensemble explores the richness of medieval monophonic and polyphonic repertoires, drawing directly on medieval sources while embracing the expressive freedom inherent to live performance. The two singers met while studying in the Master's programme in Medieval Music Performance at Sorbonne University, in Paris. Since its creation, the duo has been supported by the Centre de musique médiévale de Paris, a structure dedicated to promoting and supporting medieval music. The Trouveurs’ approach is centred on the unique possibilities offered by the vocal duo: from monophonic chant to medieval polyphony, two voices create an intimate and versatile musical space in which texts, melodies and vocal interplay can unfold with clarity and expressiveness. The ensemble performs both in concert venues and in heritage sites such as churches, castles, museums and historic monuments, creating programmes that enter into dialogue with the identity and history of each place.

Our new album

Vidimus stellam

Sacred songs for a pilgrimage to the StarLiturgical plainchants and polyphony associated with the Feast of the Epiphany are joined by pieces from the Codex Calixtinus (12th century) honoring the patron saint of pilgrims, James the Greater, as well as Marian works from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, the Codex Las Huelgas (14th century), and the Florence manuscript (13th century)—works in which the Virgin is notably invoked under the titles "Stella splendens" (resplendent star) and "Stella Maris" (star of the sea). The imagery of a star is further evoked through the selection of polyphonic conductus such as Ad superni—with its shimmering melismas—and the brilliant O gloriosa Dei Genitrix.

Other programs

On demande mout souvent qu'est amours

An exploration of the various facets of love in the writings of Adam de la Halle and the songs of the trouvères: from hope to betrayal, from doubt to bitterness, from Passion to salvation. Works by Adam de la Halle, Guillaume de Machaut, Thibaut de Champagne, and Philippe de Rémi, along with anonymous pieces from the Montpellier Codex.

Virgen esperital

This program was designed for a vocal trio (with Marc Mauillon).
A lengthy Cantiga de Santa Maria is interspersed with spirited motets featuring ingenious rhythms, Italian ballate by the legendary organist Francesco Landini, and fresh, spring-like songs by the troubadour and crusader Raimbaut de Vaqueiras. The result is a vibrant soundscape in which the Middle Ages undergoes a transformation right before our ears.

Messa in laude

This program is available in a vocal duo or trio version (with Marc Mauillon).
Polyphonies from the Italian Trecento, drawn from the Mass Ordinary, engage in dialogue with vernacular laude, songs of praise vibrant with popular fervor. Old Roman chant, predating Gregorian chant and representing the earliest musical treasure of the Roman tradition, echoes this Mass Ordinary. The program traces the highlights of the liturgical year in step with the seasons, through the sacred music of medieval Italy.
